Station Information

Location: Mirador (lookout point), Poas volcano, Costa Rica Installation Date: February 2024 (AVERT field workshop) Instrumentation:
  • MEMS-based Wee-g micro-gravimeter (University of Glasgow)
  • Continuous data output via serial communication interface
  • Integrated into the AVERT node control software
Network Role:
  • First continuous MEMS gravimeter deployed on any volcano worldwide
  • Complements GNSS and gas observations to constrain processes in the hydrothermal system and shallow magmatic reservoir
  • Serves as a test of the AVERT platform’s extensibility to new sensor types
Site Characteristics:
  • Hub station for the Poas AVERT network
  • Co-located with Starlink satellite telemetry, weather station, infrared camera, and web camera
  • Equipped with a larger power system (300 W solar panel, 2-4 x 100 Ah batteries) to support the full suite of instruments and telemetry
Data Access:
  • Gravimetric data currently archived at LDEO, being transferred to the University of Glasgow for processing
